Try These Easy Ideas to Declutter Your Garage

Open the Door to a Clean, Organized Space

When you bought your house with the two-vehicle garage, your plan was to fill the garage with … two vehicles. Right? But somehow your garage is now filled up with everything BUT two vehicles. It’s become a dumping ground for boxes of holiday decorations, bins of hand-me-down clothes and more.

At Door Pros, we’ve seen our share of cluttered garages—some so cluttered that the extra stuff makes it difficult for the automatic garage door opener to function properly. Sometimes, clutter-related issues can lead to problems that require our expert garage door repair in your Palm Springs or nearby home.

Well, we’ve done our research and uncovered tips that will help you eliminate the clutter, organize your garage and reclaim that coveted vehicle space.

Do a deep cleanse.

Step 1: First, make four piles: Keep it. Donate it. Sell it. Trash it. Then, place every item in your garage in one of those piles. Be honest. If you haven’t worn or used something in over a year, you should get rid of it. Don’t hold onto items just because you might use them. They’re taking up valuable space. And don’t keep something simply because you paid a lot for it. If you’re not using it, its monetary value means very little.

Step 2: Recycle or throw away items in the “Trash It” pile.

Step 3: Drop off items in the “Donate It” pile at your local Salvation Army, Goodwill or other donation center.

Step 4: For items you plan to sell, organize a yard sale, post the items online or take them to a local consignment shop.

Get busy organizing what remains.

Step 1: Mentally map out the space you need for your vehicles. This is sacred territory. Don’t put anything in it.

Step 2: Using the space that’s left, designate an area for frequently used items such as shoes, umbrellas, coats and pet leashes. If possible, hang items on hooks.

Step 3: Set aside another space for items such as sports equipment, gardening tools and vehicle care products.

Step 4: Decide where larger items, such as lawn mowers and snow blowers, should be stored.

Step 5: Place infrequently used items, such as holiday decorations, on high shelves that are out of the way.

Step 6: Hang bulky items, such as bikes, shovels and rakes, on the walls.

It’s that simple! When you’re finished, your garage should be neat, clean and organized with plenty of room for your vehicles. The last step is to keep it that way!
